Most people arrive asking about the Toy and leave having chosen the Miniature. It is the middle of the three sizes, and the reason it wins is unglamorous: it is small enough for a flat and solid enough to be a family dog, without asking you to choose between the two.
Size
Where the Miniature actually sits
Roughly 28 to 35 cm at the shoulder, and usually somewhere between 6 and 8 kg fully grown. Around double the weight of a Toy, and less than half that of a Standard.
The numbers undersell the difference. The step from a Toy to a Miniature is not really about height, it is about how breakable the dog is. A 3 kg dog has to be protected from ordinary household life. A 7 kg dog joins in with it.
That is the whole case for the middle size, and it is why we suggest it more often than either of the other two — particularly to families who came in certain they wanted something smaller.

Toy or Miniature?
These are the same breed with the same coat, the same brain and the same grooming bill. Everything that separates them comes down to scale.
Temperament is not a point of difference and should not be treated as one. A Toy is not more delicate in character and a Miniature is not calmer — what a Poodle is like applies equally to both. What does differ is height, weight, how the dog copes with young children, and how easily you can travel with it.
Who it suits
The size that stops you having to choose
Most size decisions are a trade-off. This one mostly is not, which is why it ends up being the default answer for so many households in the Tricity.
- Families with school-age children. Sturdy enough to be handled, hugged and occasionally sat on without it being a crisis.
- First-time owners. Small enough to manage physically, robust enough that ordinary mistakes are not costly.
- Flats and independent houses alike. It settles into either. Floor space was never the constraint at this size.
- Anyone genuinely undecided. If you cannot choose, this is the one to choose. It is the least likely of the three to be the wrong call.

What is the real difference between a Toy and a Miniature?
Size, and what size does to daily life. A Toy is roughly 3–4 kg and a Miniature roughly 6–8 kg. They are the same breed otherwise: same coat, same grooming schedule, same intelligence, same need for company. The Miniature is the more robust of the two, and the Toy is the easier to carry.
Is a Miniature Poodle calmer than a Toy?
No, and be wary of anyone who tells you otherwise. Energy and temperament come from the breed and from how the dog is raised, not from the size bracket. A badly socialised Miniature is exactly as noisy as a badly socialised Toy.
Which is better with children?
The Miniature, in most households. Not because it is friendlier — both are — but because a 7 kg dog copes with ordinary child-level handling that a 3 kg dog does not. Fewer accidents means fewer defensive habits learned, which matters over a fifteen-year life.
Does a Miniature Poodle need a garden?
No. It needs a daily walk outside, which is a different thing. Plenty of Miniature Poodles live well in Tricity apartments. A garden is convenient for toilet breaks, not a requirement for the dog’s wellbeing.
Is a “Medium” Poodle a real size?
In some registries, yes. The FCI recognises four sizes and places a Medium between the Miniature and the Standard; the American Kennel Club recognises three and does not. So the term is legitimate but not universal — if a seller uses it, ask for the actual height and the size of both parents rather than relying on the label.
