The journey home
Doing a long drive properly with an eight-week-old
Our general collection advice assumes a short Tricity hop. From Ludhiana it is a different job, and worth planning rather than improvising.
- Bring a second person. Not optional at this distance. Someone needs to be with the puppy for the whole journey while somebody else drives.
- Use a carrier, secured. A loose or lap-held puppy in a car for two hours is unsafe for the puppy and for you.
- Travel in the cooler part of the day where you can, and keep the car properly cool. Heat is the main risk on a long summer drive.
- Do not feed a full meal before setting off. Offer water at a break instead. Expect car sickness anyway and bring towels.
- Plan one quiet stop — somewhere calm rather than a busy dhaba forecourt. The puppy has not finished its vaccinations, so keep it off the ground in public areas and ask your vet what applies.
- Go straight home from there. No detour to show the puppy to relatives, however tempting after a long drive.
- Expect a rough first night. A long journey on top of leaving its mother and littermates is a great deal for one day. The first forty-eight hours.

Distance makes no difference to that part. We stay reachable on the same number through the settling-in weeks, and we would far rather hear about a problem early. See a vet locally and promptly if the puppy is unwell.
