The Poodle comes in three recognised sizes, and the difference between them decides almost everything about living with one — the flat you can keep it in, the walks it needs, the grooming bill. Getting that choice right matters more than the colour.
The breed
What a Poodle is actually like
Poodles have a reputation for being decorative. The show clip has a lot to answer for. They are working dogs by origin — bred to retrieve from water — and they behave like it.
- Genuinely trainable. Among the quickest breeds to pick up routine, which makes them forgiving for first-time owners who put the work in early.
- People-oriented to a fault. They want to be in the room with you. A Poodle left alone all day is a Poodle that finds something to do, and you will not like it.
- More energy than expected. Even the small sizes need a real walk and real play, not a turn around the block.
- A coat, not a shedding fur. It keeps growing rather than dropping. That is why they suit households sensitive to loose hair — and why they need grooming for life.
The honest line on allergies. Poodles are often sold as hypoallergenic. No dog is. The coat sheds far less hair than most breeds, which helps a great deal in practice, but allergens also travel in dander and saliva. If someone at home has a diagnosed allergy, spend time around the specific dog first and take medical advice.
The three sizes
Toy, Miniature or Standard
These are the three sizes recognised by the major kennel clubs. Heights below are measured at the shoulder and are the breed standard, not a promise about an individual puppy — registries differ slightly and dogs vary.

Up to about 28 cm
Toy Poodle
The smallest of the three, and the one most Tricity apartment buyers ask about first. Small enough for a flat, light enough to carry, and still an alert, busy dog.
Suits: apartments and smaller homes. Still needs daily walks — small does not mean sedentary. Not the best match for a household with very young children, simply because a small dog is easier to injure.

Miniature Poodle
The middle option, and often the sensible one. Sturdier than a Toy without needing the space a Standard does.
Suits: most flats and independent houses, and families who want a small dog that is robust enough for children. This is the size buyers most often settle on after comparing the other two.

Standard Poodle
A large, athletic dog. The original working size, and the one people are most often surprised by when they meet it.
Suits: independent houses with room, and owners who will commit to real daily exercise. Not a realistic choice for a compact flat, whatever the breeder tells you.

Day to day
What it costs you in time, not money
The coat is the commitment nobody budgets for. A Poodle coat keeps growing and it mats if it is left. Expect brushing at home several times a week and a professional groom roughly every six to eight weeks, for the dog’s whole life. Skipping it does not save money — it ends in a coat that has to be clipped off.
Then the heat. May and June here are hard on a thick-coated dog. Walks move to early morning and late evening, shade and water stop being optional, and a sensible summer clip helps a great deal.

FAQ
Questions we get about Poodles
Which size suits an apartment?
Usually a Toy or a Miniature. Both are small enough for a flat, and the Miniature is the sturdier of the two if there are children at home. A Standard Poodle in a compact flat is not a fair arrangement for the dog. Whichever size you choose, it still needs a proper daily walk.
Do you sell teacup Poodles?
No. “Teacup” is a marketing label, not a size recognised by any kennel club. It usually describes a dog bred deliberately undersized, and that is associated with fragile bones, dental crowding, low blood sugar and a shorter life. We work with the three recognised sizes and we would rather lose the enquiry than sell the term.
Are Poodles hypoallergenic?
No dog is truly hypoallergenic. The Poodle coat sheds much less hair than most breeds, which genuinely helps with loose hair around the house, but allergens are also carried in dander and saliva. If there is a diagnosed allergy at home, spend time with the specific dog first and take medical advice before committing.

How old should a puppy be before it comes home?
Indian rules prohibit the sale of a puppy under eight weeks of age, and there are good behavioural reasons for the rule beyond the legal one. Ask anyone selling you a puppy for its date of birth, and be wary of a seller who cannot give you one.
What does a Poodle puppy cost?
Price depends on the individual puppy, so we quote per puppy rather than publishing a range that would be misleading. Published Indian figures for Poodles vary enormously, which is exactly why a single number on a webpage is not much use to you.
